Join us for part two of Ed's two-part description of the Politics and Practice of Project Scheduling!

The project schedule is the most powerful, underappreciated, and underutilized tool in the project toolbox. It is a contract between the project team, owner/sponsor, and stakeholders. It represents a promise by task owners to deliver defined results on their target dates. It is a communication vehicle enabling all interested parties to know what has been planned and accomplished, and the current best estimate of deliverable dates. And it enables the owner/sponsor and project team to collaborate to meet their commitments as early as possible in the face of unexpected impediments. We'll discuss who should build and maintain the schedule, when it should be used with Agile, and how it can be used to optimize results.

Most MS Project (MSP) training provides descriptions of the rich collection of features and functions that have evolved in the product over years of refinement, and the many ways it may be used. The blizzard of options combined with the lack of process guidance has resulted in MSP's reputation for being complex and difficult to use. Twenty-five years of exploring and using MSP to plan, track, control, and report on multi-project portfolios on behalf of clients has resulted in a way for owner/sponsors and project teams without MSP expertise to understand and control their projects together. Few project managers have the time or experience to take MSP to that level, thus the justification for a professional project scheduler. This talk will describe the Politics and Practice of Project Scheduling.

Ed Mahler, PMP, is President of the Project Administration Institute, Inc. (PAI), an international consulting firm specializing in high visibility MS Project scheduling services and training for the corporate world since 1992 Prior to PAI Ed served with IBM as a systems engineer and project manager on NYC international customer accounts and as project manager and consultant on IBM internal projects. Ed was Vice President of Programs for the New York City PMI chapter from 1993 to 2000, founder of the PMI Westchester chapter in 2002, and its president to 2008. Ed has presented at PMI Symposiums and Congresses, Construction CPM conferences, PMI College of Scheduling and non-PMI PM COS conferences, AACE, and other organization meetings. Ed lives in Larchmont, NY, and sails on Long Island Sound.
