Succeeding in a Startup Environment
Startups are an important source of jobs in the United States; without startups, there would be no job growth. 11.8% of the population are involved in setting up a business according to statista.com. Certainly, the Covid-19 pandemic will affect the makeup of jobs once the dust has settled – we will find some industries diminished and other new industries starting to take hold. Startups are a source of exciting jobs for Project Managers. Project Managers have important skills and tools to help startups effectively navigate their growth - they can help these companies Plan so that they Survive First Contact! Allison will share how her project management capabilities combined with planning helped her first land a position at a startup and then thrive in the environment.
Allison has led global departments and global technology implementations for a full spectrum of companies from small software companies to Fortune 500 corporations. Her ability to adapt to the situation at hand while providing planning, structure and guidance for teams to meet strategic goals has provided the foundation upon which she has built a successful career.
Allison now works at a fintech startup, Digital Swiss Gold, where she was among the first five employees. Allison will share how flexibility combined with planning and project management tools have enabled her to navigate the transition from large company to startup. She will share the challenges that early-stage startups confront. She has learned that the most effective way to address the constant change in a startup is to have a good project management toolkit - "No Plan Survives First Contact with the Enemy”!
Allison Smith Terrey is Head of Customer Service at Digital Swiss Gold. Allison has a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from The University of Pennsylvania and both Master of Engineering, Operations Research and Statistics and MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Allison has held her PMP since 2018.
